Ripe n’ Ready

Ripe n’ Ready is an organic produce brand looking for unique packaging that not only prevents plastic waste, but also tells the brand’s story and adds value to the consumer’s life once brought home. The goal was to redesign produce packaging entirely from sustainable paperboard, aiming to eliminate the need for the plastic bags that are currently used for fruit bundles in most grocery stores.

For this project, I worked with another designer and a group specializing in structural packaging.

The problem

Lack of sustainability: Apples are currently packed in mostly mesh bags, HDPE bags, or plastic stand up bags

Lack of apple packaging that also allows you to store the apples (in fridge, on counter, etc) aesthetically or with easy access

Strategy

  • 100% recyclable with no plastic

  • Protection for the apples to prevent bruising

  • Strong package to hold the weight

  • Visibility of apples

  • Ability to store in fridge or on counter for easy access

  • Convey that the apples are organic and the package is sustainable

  • Tell a story to connect to the consumer

  • Use color to differentiate the apple types

Target Audience

  • Organic produce buyers

  • Healthy snackers

  • Generally health conscious individuals who dislike processed foods

  • Those who care about the environment and sustainability

  • People who like to prolong freshness of fruit and not waste
